The PATAFEST team tested innovative biocontrol coatings for postharvest potato protection at Cranfield University, marking a significant step toward sustainable agriculture. Collaboration with the Postharvest Research Group enriched project strategies, showcasing the power of teamwork in tackling global challenges.
November marked an exciting milestone for the PATAFEST project as we made significant strides in developing innovative solutions for sustainable potato protection.
Christian Ghidelli, a researcher from FUNDITEC, visited the prestigious Plant Science Laboratory at Cranfield University to collaborate with researchers Marta Sanzo and Mari Carmen Alamar. The team worked on testing the first prototypes of biocontrol coatings designed to protect potato tubers from pathogenic diseases during postharvest storage.
During this research session, coated potato samples were stored in various controlled atmosphere environments. This innovative approach aims to investigate how biocontrol technologies can work in synergy with advanced storage methods to reduce disease incidence and extend the shelf life of potatoes under commercial conditions.
A Meeting of Minds: Collaboration with the Postharvest Research Group
The visit also included a productive meeting with the Postharvest Research Group at Cranfield University. Researchers reviewed the overall progress of the PATAFEST project and shared insights into its integrated pest management strategies. This dynamic exchange of ideas helped refine project strategies, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in addressing challenges in sustainable agriculture.
The PATAFEST project, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe Framework Programme, exemplifies the power of joint research initiatives. By bringing together diverse expertise and cutting-edge technology, the project is paving the way for resilient, sustainable solutions to potato plant diseases and postharvest challenges.
